According to WHO Diabetes Mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases in which there are high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period. Some of the early symptoms include frequent urination, increased thirst and hunger. Diabetes, if left untreated can cause severe complications. The inability of pancreas to produce adequate insulin, or the cells of the body not responding properly to the insulin provided leads to Diabetes.
Though there is a medication for controlling Diabetes in allopathy, we look at the treatment of Diabetes in Unani form of medicine. Diabetes in Arabic is known by the name Ziabetes or Dolar or Zalaqul Kulya. In this disease the mizaj (temperament) of kidneys becomes haar (hot) because of which they absorb water from blood circulation and send it to the urinary bladder immediately.
There are two kinds of Diabetes according to Unani. One is Ziabetes Haar in which acute symptoms of diabetes (with abrupt onset) occur; such as, feeling excessive thirsty, increase in urination. Another is Ziabetes Shakri which is characterised by excessive thirst, urination and presence of sugar in urine.
The conventional form of medicine (Allopathy) categorises Diabetes as a disorder, which cannot be cured but only controlled. However Unani practitioners believe that it is possible to cure Diabetes by enlivening the inactive pancreatic cells, which are responsible for this condition.

Yogasanas for relief from Diabetes:
Practicing Upavishta Bakasana (sitting crane), Bakasana (standing crane) and Dhanurasana would be useful for those suffering from Diabetes.
Regular and correct practice of such asanas helped stimulate the hormonal secretion of pancreas and rejuvenate its capacity to produce Insulin. Further, the balancing in Bakasana improved interaction between pituitary gland and pancreas.
Apart from practicing these Asanas, alternate nostril breathing is found to be very useful for those suffering from Diabetes. Also known as Kapaal Bhaati – it soothens the nervous system and reduce stress levels thereby helping in diabetes treatment.
