Body and mind of ladies undergo many changes from childhood to old age. Specifically, menstrual disorders are major burning health problems of the modern era.
Dysmenorrhea or menstrual cramps is one among such disorders. It is called Rithu Shoola in Ayurveda and 40-50 % of Ladies suffer from Ritushoola.
Teenage girls are more prone to this disorder. Awareness, care, and simple home remedies will give comfort to the ladies suffering from Menstrual cramps.
Dysmenorrhea is also called as Kastaarthara in Ayurveda, which has main symptoms of pain in the lower abdomen radiating to the limbs in the first 3 days of menses causing nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and leg cramps.
The pain can be dull, throbbing, shooting type of pain; bleeding may be less or clotted.
Ladies having Kastavarthava suffer nightmares during the 3 days of the cycle.
There are good remedies and cure for Dysmenorrhea in Ayurveda depending upon the causes.

Apaanavatha plays a major role in normal menstruation.
Vitiated Apavana vatha, which has to flow downwards in the pelvic area, moves upwards in the pelvic floor and pelvic area thus inducing (Udavarthini) or Dysmenorrhea. In modern aspects, it is considered as primary and secondary dysmenorrhea.
Primary dysmenorrhea is not having any underlying causes, whereas secondary dysmenorrhea is associated with uterine disorders such as Endometriosis, Ovarian cysts, Pelvic congestion leiomyoma.
Secondary Dysmenorrhea has pain in between cycles too. Primary dysmenorrhea causes severe muscular spasm.
Stress has become an inevitable part of modern life. Even with the increase of comforts, woman has failed to take care of her body and mind. Menstrual cramps are mainly caused due to the sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercises, unhealthy diet, etc.
According to Ayurveda, Oleation or Snehakarma with Thririth Sneha; Sweda Karma (not fermentation) with milk or herbal kashaya is effective. Similarly, other Panchakarma treatments like Anuvasana and Uttara hasti relieve the symptoms of dysmenorrhea. Thririth Sneha is considered best for this.
Mint Tea: Pudina decoction Tea helps in relieving Dysmenorrhea: 1/2 cup, 2-3 times a day.
Ginger lemon cola: In boiling water add crushed ginger, reduced to half coded and strained then add lemon juice and Jaggery. This taken 1 cup 3-4 times per day during menses relieves dysmenorrhea.
Thulasi or Holy basis contains high mounts eugenol which is a good pain killer. Using Tulasi leaves juice or decoction reduces pain during menses and relaxes the mind too.
Coriander: Around 3-4 fresh coriander stems to be taken, cut and boiled in water and this water reduces the menses pain immensely. Beetroot juice also helps in keeping away menstrual pain.
Ayurvedic Medicines for Kastarthava
Kumari Asva, Sri Kumara Kashayam, Gynoredan capsules, Rajaprvarthinivati with Shathavari, Dhanwantri oil as an external application is effective in relieving Dysmenorrhea. Thus many effective medicines are available in Ayurveda; however, these medicines have to be taken according to Roga Bala, Rogibaladehaprakruthi after consulting doctors. In the case of Endometriosis and such other reasons, these causes have to be treated first.
Yogasanas & Exercises
Dietary changes: Too much vata causing food (Vathala ahara) should be avoided. Too much of junk food and such foods which cause constipation should be avoided.
